Wikia - creating communities
[edit] porting monobook to Monaco
Hey KyleH,
I'm actually in the middle of using my semi-limited knowledge and understanding of CSS to port it over. As I mentioned on IRC, Angela set us up a testwiki for doing some customisation <on. I'm partly through it, still need much more to do. :)
As for the front page, I was thinking more of a modular design akin to wowwiki's. Means we can expand a section or have a large poll, without worrying about other sections stretching have having massive spaces in them. :)
There is a bit of a design on the test wiki atm, but more than willing to change it.
Also, the header background is only a temporary thing atm that I'm messing about with.

[edit] Monaco skin
I saw your comment on the RuneScape wiki Yew Grove about using Monaco. Personally, I like monobook, and I know most users at our site do. It's just simple. However... I'm really liking Monaco now (Quartz, not at all). I started to create my own Monaco skin and was actually hoping to maybe present it to the community once finished as the Custom Monaco skin for our wiki. But, I don't know CSS, so a lot of my work has been taking things from other wikis (FFXIclopedia being the one I'm referring to, which you also suggested =]) and from a personal monobook of one of our users, adapted from a Common version I think mostly created by Richard1990 (but again, we like plain monobook, so the custom one didn't last long). But I have some issues and I was wondering if you could help, or refer me to someone who could. I know there's a staff meet-up going on, so the people I've tried contacting in IRC have been busy with other things. =P What I have so far is here and what it looks like is this. I'm aiming for something like this. Links on that first bar are what I need help fixing, and the links up top where it says "Gaming" next to wikia, because that's only visible because of the monaco skin I have set in the background, I know if I changed it to say, "slate" or something, it wouldn't be readable. Links in and TOCs are blue and hard to read also. And, if there's any way to insert a temporary logo, just as a way to test things out and see how everything looks when experimenting, I could use that help too. Thanks =] ChristineTalk 02:15, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Namespaces added to article count
- Yu-Gi-Oh! Wikia. We need Portal, Card Lores, Card Names and Cart Artworks, added to the total article count. Thanks in advance.--TwoTailedFox (My Talk Page) 18:45, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
- Also, we need three more namespaces added (and to be specified as content namespaces, too, as well as the other four above), Set Card Lists, Set Card Galleries, and Set Card Ratios. These three need SQL commands, since they're currently occupied.--TwoTailedFox (My Talk Page) 20:23, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] GuildWiki Merge
I noticed I appeared on the list of account conflicts on GuildWiki. I'm just wondering why. I set up these accounts exactly the same, or does preferences have to be the same too? Thoughtful 03:24, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
- There were a few cases where people were renamed even if they had their accounts set up the same on both GuildWiki and Wikia. Please make note of the issue on the migration talk page and the tech team will take a look at it. --KyleH
(talk) 06:16, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
- According to Stabber, its fairly easy to merge contributions;
% cd wikidir/maintenance %cp ../AdminSettings.sample ../AdminSettings.php # (and edit it) % php reassignEdits.php GW-Warwick Warwick
Etc. For each person, change GW-Warwick to GW-{User}, and Warwick to {User}.
That should cause all contributions by GW-Warwick to be moved to Warwick. Though you probably already knew that. -- Image:MaySig.png Warw/Wick 11:06, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, it's not quite that simple here, but we should still be able to take care of any rename requests fairly quickly. --KyleH

[edit] Title blacklist for EVCHK.
I know that there is Extension:SpamBlacklist installed for anti-spam. And one of Community Team suggest me use that to protect articles to create.
However, I think Extension:Title Blacklist is better and easier for local wikia sysop to maintain.
May I request to install it for EVCHK?
Other questions: Should the Local Spam Blacklist add in MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist or MediaWiki:Blacklist title list ( such as c:evchk:MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist or c:evchk:MediaWiki:Blacklist title list)?
Also, I don't know whether the regular expressions of Spam Blacklist is in UTF-8 mode... --疾風綾希 17:42, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
- To edit the local spam blacklist, you will need to add entries to c:evchk:MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist. MediaWiki:Blacklist title list is used only for our global filter; changes on the local wiki version do not take effect.
- Why do you feel that Extension:Title Blacklist would be easier to maintain than Extension:SpamBlacklist? They both perform almost the same function, so we probably wouldn't be able to install Title Blacklist when we already have SpamBlacklist available. --KyleH
(talk) 20:16, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
- Because Extension:Title Blacklist is designated for protecting the titles ONLY, it doesn't care about what the page contents.
e.g. I wanna to protect any titles contain the string "HKGolden" to create, but we still need put the URLs or contents contain this string. For now, I have to wirte regex in both blacklist and whitelist.
(ah~ it may not be done as it checks the title and contents in same time.
If I put such regex in blacklist, a tons of articles [of course these are references, NOT spam] are not able to edit. However If I put another regex in whitelist, it will make a trap to let user create the titles contain the string to vandalise.)
And I have test some regex which pass the test in PHP, it seems not effective. Anonymous are still able to create such title.
Especially it causes some issuses in East Asian languages, which don't use space between words.--疾風綾希 09:04, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
- Because Extension:Title Blacklist is designated for protecting the titles ONLY, it doesn't care about what the page contents.
- I forget saying that one more reason is "Title Blacklist is stable while SpamBlacklist is considered experimental".:P--疾風綾希 09:07, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
- For similar reason, please consider about Extension:Username Blacklist--疾風綾希 09:31, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

- Is it w:c:evchk:MediaWiki:Local title blacklist? And I don't know which extension in w:c:evchk:Special:Version is the exact one.
Is that function base on Extension:Title Blacklist?--疾風綾希 05:06, 27 September 2008 (UTC) - And can I use optional attributes such as <autoconfirmed|casesensitive|moveonly|newaccountonly|reupload|errmsg|noedit>?--疾風綾希 05:12, 27 September 2008 (UTC)
- The page should be MediaWiki:Blacklist title list, but it appears that something is not working correctly. I'm looking in to it and will reply when I have more information. You can not use optional attributes with this title blacklist. This is just change to the existing title blacklist rather than an installation of Extension:Title Blacklist, so it doesn't have any extra features. --KyleH

- Hi! I apologize for taking so long to get back to you, but the title blacklist is cached, so it only updates on the server once every hour or so. I have checked c:evchk:MediaWiki:Blacklist title list, and it seems to be working fine; however, you should be aware that changes to that list can take an hour or so to work properly. There was a problem with it before, but it should be fixed now. I am afraid that there is no whitelist. I have requested that our engineers evaluate Extension:Title Blacklist to allow you more flexibility; however, that process will probably take a while because even simple changes to a system as large as Wikia can have dramatic impacts. --KyleH

how do i promote others to admin
- clank 720
- Heya! To promote someone, all you have to do is go to Special:Userrights, enter their name, and add them as a sysop. You should only promote people that you and the other members of your community feel are trustworthy, because you can not remove that right from them yourself if it becomes a problem (we can remove the flag for you, but only in situations where they are grossly abusing the privilege). --KyleH

[edit] Death Note Wiki
Hello. I just wanted to take the opportunity to apologize for my message yesterday. Upon second examination, I may have come across a little harsh in my attitude language. I was merely frustrated because it seemed like the issue was being ignored. Looking back on it today, it seems like such a trifle how I was ranting on and on about something relatively small.
I also wanted to say thank you very much for your patience and dignified treatment. Most people I know would just start firing away when confronted with such a situation. It is great to know that Wikia has such awesome staff members helping people out instead of ignoring the problem like everybody else does.
I appreciate the advice you gave to me as well. I should have contacted the user through his talk page first, and then his e-mail and myspace. However, I went through the process backwards, which is my own fault. Hopefully, I can get in contact with the user and attempt to communicate with him before he falls off the radar for another week and a half.
Once again, many thanks for your time and efforts, as they as much appreciated. I am hopeful that the next time we speak will be under more auspicious circumstances.
-Mogturmen 14:32, 27 September 2008 (UTC)
- Don't worry, I understand your frustration. I figured that you had spoken with him privately previously, but in this case, I think it is best to try to work things out in a way that I can watch and try to help you in the process. Let's give it a few days and see what happens. --KyleH

[edit] Becoming a trusted member of the community
Hello KyleH,
If you have no answer for this, it is ok. How long does it take the average account person to get trusted in a wikia? this is a hard question so if you dont know than you can erase this. Thank you.TriforceKnight 20:35, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Tritem! There is no definite answer for that because it varies from wiki to wiki; however, I would discourage you from thinking about adminship as some status for you to strive to attain. Being an admin is nothing special. They're just people that have put a lot of work in to the wiki, so the community has determined that they can be trusted with a few extra tools which, for practical reasons, can't be given to everyone. That's not to say that they don't have an important role, because they do, but they get there just because they are dedicated people who are trying to improve the wiki in any way that they can. --KyleH

[edit] DeathNote Wiki
Hello there. I don't know if you remember me or my e-mail from a week ago, yet I wanted to get in contact with you again. I took your advice to wait a week for this user to appear, when last night Dreamanderson finally decided to show his "face" after over two (2) weeks neglecting Death Note Wiki. However, when he did stop in, very briefly, he chose to completely ignore my most sincere request to join the site, deciding instead to begin reverting and squelching all my valid and helpful contributions once again. After this, I would be very lucky to see any sign of him for at least another few weeks...
It is my sincere belief that this user will continue to undermine my (and other user's) edits in order to merely suit his ego. In the past 3 weeks, I've done everything within my ability for this Wiki, which is more than he's done in a year! All that, only to be treated like dirt by this person who has a power complex as well as an addiction to cocaine. The way that this user enacts his Napoleon-like issues as well as flaunting his drug abuse serves only to disgrace Wikia.com. It is also a very negative image for all the users who seek help, guidance and advice in regards to Death Note Wiki, all of which they never get from this so-called "sysop."
This user has no intention to work with me (or others) as a team, which is how a Community works. This kid only desires the power to alone have complete rule over the website that he himself was only appointed to a few months ago! He has no interest in allowing me or other people to help out, which is ironic, as he never shows up but once a month. Even then, what help is it for the Wiki to change little more than a couple letters, then disappearing again for who knows how long?! Please bring an end to this drama, as I have done all that I can and then some for the Wiki that I loyally defend and build up every day!
-Mogturmen 16:51, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Mogturmen,
- I have been watching the wiki for the past two weeks, and while I understand your concerns, I'm afraid that I'm just not seeing the issues the same way that you are. It is true that Dreamanderson hasn't been around too terribly much, but I am not seeing that his absence is having a negative impact on the wiki. You are already welcoming new users and giving them guidance and advice without being a sysop. That's the great thing about a wiki ... you don't have to be anyone special or have any elevated privileges to make a significant impact on the wiki.
- I left a message on Dreamanderson's talk page. If there are any changes that you feel need to be made which require sysop privileges, such as changing MediaWiki messages or unprotecting certain pages, let me know and I'll be happy to help. I don't, however, believe that there is a compelling reason for us to dive in and take things over. Doing so would probably cause more problems that it would solve, especially since there aren't a bunch of compelling issues which require admin attention at this time. --KyleH

[edit] Template trouble on Christianity wikia English
Hi, I'm User:Kathleen.wright5 from Christianity Wikia English. I've been having trouble with Template:Infobox Pope. Its OK on its own template page but not on articles. So I had a look at the same template on Wikipedia and I noticed it had Template:UF-hcard-person, which I put on its own page at Christianity Wikia. The articles it was linked to looked the same so I put Template:UF-hcard-person on the same page as the above template. When I looked at the articles that were linked to the templates I noticed the sidebar had the image missing. I then removed the content from Template:UF-hcard-person, but not deleted (I'm not an Admin). I then removed the templates from the article pages by putting the information from it into list form. The article pages still have the image missing on the sidebar. The articles that were linked are - Pope Paul VI, Pope John Paul I, Pope John XXIII, Pope Pius XII, Pope Pius XI, Pope Anacletus, Pope Pius IX, Pope Boniface VIII and Pope Clement I. Infobox Pope can be found under Category:Templates and Template:UF-hcard-person can be found at Category:Template templates. Could you please delete both of them. Hi. As the original admin for the hungarian star wars wiki site (http://hu.starwars.wikia.com/wiki/) has been missing for a long time our small group of users decided to elect a new admin for the site for practical reasons (vandalism, development, etc.). We tried to solve the problem by leaving a message at help desk, where others suggested to ask someone of the wikia staff to set that rights. Our elected user for the new admin is Kamocsaip. [edit] KanzakaDex repeated vandalism
Hi. Someone seems to have a vendetta against our user AstroNerdBoy (perhaps because of his anime blog? who knows?) and has been vandalizing his user and user talk page repeatedly. After they've been protected to prevent unregistered edits, he/she has started posting the same stuff on my talk page... I wonder whether there is way to solve this problem (like semi-protecting all pages for a limited time) or do I have to protect every single page which was a target of vandalism until the guy gives up? (Your spam filter interestingly tried to block out my edit because of the word "vandalism". Strange. :/ ) --Pip25 08:16, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
- Hey, Pip! The most important thing to make a vandal lose interest is to pay them as little attention as possible. Just revert, block, and ignore. Generic block reasons like "vandalism" or "intimidating behavior/harassment" are ideal because they don't get personal. The first two IPs are from completely different states, however 194.110.160.24 looks a bit like a proxy, so it may or may not be a coordinated attack. --CharitwoTalk 13:39, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the tip. :) I'll try that. --Pip25 21:22, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
[edit] French RuneScape
Hi there. Sometime this month, RuneScape will come out with a French version of their game. I went to the French RuneScape wiki located here to check on its status since it would now be quite useful and much more popular once the update comes out. Unfortunately, the wiki is abandoned and in disrepair. Of the 15 articles, some are only vandalism and some are bad computer translations. Moreover, templates were created in English and refer and link to articles and users of the English RuneScape wiki. Is there any way to "reset" the wikia or, failing that, could you grant me administrator rights so that I can start repairing the site? Thanks.--Template:Signatures/Diberville 15:40, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Diberville! The French Runescape wiki definitely needs some love. There is still a lot that you can do as a regular user though. Why don't you start out by making a few contributions, then once you have spent a little bit of time there yourself, you can request to adopt the wiki here. --KyleH

- Heh, so I'm guessing that's a "No" on both the reset and admin rights. I had thought that perhaps the adoption process was the way to go were this the case and thank you for your forethought in telling me that it is. Two final quick questions: 1) could you delete the article I linked to above and 2) when requesting adoption, does my work on the English RuneScape wiki have any weight or is that wholly irrelevant? Thanks again.--Template:Signatures/Diberville 01:25, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
- I've deleted the article per your request. You're right that it's a "no", but only for right this second. ;) The wiki desperately needs an admin. We very rarely delete and recreate wikis, but I doubt you'll have any trouble adopting the wiki once you have a few contributions in it. It's great that you have contributed a lot to the English Runescape wiki, but the wiki adoption process isn't really about who is "worthy" of adopting the wiki ... we just want to make sure that you be active on and dedicated to the community that you want to adopt. Plus, the steps listed at the top of the adoption request page are things that will help make the wiki a great wiki anyway! --KyleH

Hi. Sorry to bother you again but I have three questions. 1) Could you please delete this page, 2) how do I change the generic Wikia logo in the navigation panel to this logo and 3) do the 20 new pages required for the adoption include or exclude templates? Thanks! --Template:Signatures/Diberville 02:38, 10 December 2008 (UTC)
- I have deleted that page for you. To change the wiki's logo, just upload Image:Wiki.png to the wiki. Regarding the 20 pages, generally those pages should be main namespace pages. This is for a number of reasons, but it's mainly because content pages are what make up the meat of the wiki, and they're what show up in Google. --KyleH

I have now adopted the wiki! I just want to thank you for your help and advice with the adoption, it was greatly appreciated.--Template:Signatures/Diberville 04:16, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
- Great! I'm thrilled to see that the wiki is in good hands. :) --KyleH

[edit] Spoiler/Hidden template
Hello KyleH
You recently helped the Warhammer Online Wikia getting a collapsible spoiler tempalte ([2]). I've been trying to add one of those to the Forgotten Realms wiki, but with no luck. Think you can work your magic over here too? :) Thanks in advance. Zeraktalk 09:04, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Zerak! I'll try to take a look at this for you tomorrow. --KyleH

[edit] Generic Starter Wikia
Hi. What's the purpose and/or future of Generic? — Robin Patterson (Talk) 11:49, 12 December 2008 (UTC)
- Generic starter is planned to be used for new wikis in languages that don't have their own starter. It uses MediaWiki namespace messages which have already been translated so that it will appear in the user's own language (Welsh for example). Angela

[edit] Mediation
Hi. I am requesting mediation for this Forum:De-adminship_of_Jorge_Queirolo_Bravo_on_es.literatura. That page has all the information about it. Thanks in advance. --David 15:00, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
